French bishop reported to Vatican for emotional abuse
The Vatican was informed of the alleged sexual abuse of a French bishop.
Bishop Michel Sentier (pictured) has been quietly reprimanded by the Vatican and has reported to the diocese that he will resign in 2021 for “health reasons”.
However, every week Famile Chrétienne Santier revealed that he was also dismissed for “using his influence over two young adult men for sexual purposes” in the 1990s and for abusing the sacrament of penance.
The Vatican ordered him to live a “life of prayer and penance” in a Normandy monastery.
However, Archbishop Dominique Leblanc, the archbishop of Sentier, announced last week that “other people” have since filed allegations against Sentier.
They allege that the retired bishop sexually abused him when he was young.
“After hearing firsthand from one of these victims yesterday (October 19), I immediately reported the doctrine to the Papal Diocese via the Holy See,” said Leblanc.
“In the face of revelations that underscore the seriousness of the charges against Bishop Michel Sentier, there is no question that Decastery will conduct a new investigation.”
Santier retired two years earlier than the usual age of 75.
In a June 2020 letter to the Herd, he explained that “the polluted air of the Paris region” didn’t suit him, leading to his diagnosis of asthma and sleep apnea.
He had been hospitalized with COVID-19 in April of that year.
“I don’t have the strength to continue ministry among you until I’m 75,” he said at the time. did not clarify.
These difficulties, the Catholic magazine Famile Chrétienne The cases, reported earlier this month, involved “psychological abuse for sexual purposes committed against two adult men” in the 1990s.
A French bishop has confirmed that Rome has taken “disciplinary action” against Santier in October 2021 for acts that emerged in 2019. The two men requested anonymity.
Last Friday, Archbishop Eric de Moulin-Beaufort, president of the French bishops’ conference, admitted that the revelation had caused “shock” among French Catholics.
“The feeling of betrayal, the temptation to be discouraged, is an emotion that I understand, an emotion that runs through us, the understanding and anger of many people before the action itself,” he said. I got
“I have also heard and received criticisms made about the lack of communication when the Rome measure was enacted.
“There can be no impunity in the church, regardless of the role of the parties involved.”
Moulins-Beaufort said at a plenary session in Lourdes next week, French bishops will ponder how to communicate the findings to Catholics.
“We bring to Rome the fruits of our reflection and suggestions to improve what can be improved,” he said.
French Catholics are aware of a string of abuse scandals in recent years.
In 2021, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE) concluded that as many as 330,000 children were abused in the French Catholic Church between 1950 and 2020.
The French bishops then pledged to implement a “massive update” of governing practices.
