A prominent US cardinal has criticized US conservative Catholic media conglomerate Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) for its fundamental criticism of Pope Francis.
In an interview with Spanish magazine Vida Nueva, San Diego Cardinal Robert McElroy (pictured) backed Bishop Fernando Prado of San Sebastian, Spain, in banning parish television from airing content produced by EWTN.
“There is no EWTN in the parish media either,” McElroy replied.
“I am concerned because EWTN represents a giant of economic and cultural power related to religious views that fundamentally criticize the pope,” the cardinal said.
McElroy argued that the channel’s primary anchor was always trying to minimize Francis’ abilities and theological knowledge, keeping the world away from the reforms he was signaling.
McElroy said Francis encountered opposition because of his intention to complete the work of the Second Vatican Council and because he always puts the experiences and spiritual perspectives of the Global South at the heart of the life of the Church. I got
The Cardinals believe that this opposition is exacerbated by Catholic concerns that the Pope is open to exploring pastoral paths not prohibited by existing doctrinal formulations.
McElroy calls for deacons to open up to women
In the interview, McElroy reiterated his earlier call to open deacons to women, raising concerns about the ordination of women to the priesthood. We fear that the Order will divide the Church deeply, and for this reason it should not be the purpose of the Synod Process.
McElroy praised the Pope for including women in the Church’s structure, but said the Church was still looking for a theological framework that would fully reveal the equality of women.
McElroy’s recent writings on how the church should serve LGBTQ people and divorced and remarried Catholics include an essay in which Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois accused McElroy of heresy. I received a big backlash.
When asked by Vida Nueva if the accusations of heresy hurt him, McElroy admitted it did, but he said it hurt the church more.
“This language further jeopardizes the church by destroying the dialogue we should be maintaining these days about the fundamental issues facing us,” McElroy said.
McElroy said Francis’ concern was the complex lives of believers and how the gospel and church traditions can be applied in effective and compassionate ways to the lives of those who strive diligently to draw close to and follow God. said he was concentrating on his way.
“During all these discussions of doctrinal issues, it’s important to resist the temptation to use negative labels for those who adopt stances contrary to ours,” McElroy said.
