Bodies of football journalists returned to America
“American journalist Grant Wall has been returned to his family in the United States. We are honored to have brought him home. Thank you for your cooperation and transparency,” Timmy Davis, US Ambassador to Qatar, said in a tweet on Monday.
Ex-Wall sports illustrated A sportswriter who migrated to the Substack online publishing platform tweeted about Friday’s game between the Netherlands and Argentina.
His agent told Reuters that Wall “looked like he was in some kind of serious pain at the start of extra time” in the quarter-final match.
Agents said an attempt was made to revive Wall in the press box before he was taken to a local hospital and was confirmed dead on Friday.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Monday that a post-mortem examination of Wall’s body would be conducted with the coroner’s office, but there were no indications of foul play in his death.
US Secretary of State Anthony Brinken tweeted on Monday: “My deepest condolences to his family and thanks to the embassy team and partners in Qatar for working so effectively to fulfill their wishes. I will,” he added.
Wall wrote earlier this week that he visited a hospital while in Qatar and was told by health officials that he likely had bronchitis.
Wall said in late November that he was temporarily stopped while trying to enter a security checkpoint at a World Cup stadium while wearing a rainbow shirt to support the LGBTQ community.
Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.
He said World Cup guards refused him entry to the U.S.’s opening game against Wales and asked him to remove his shirt.
