Are CBD Gummies Safe for Kids? What Parents Should Know

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound extracted from hemp or marijuana, available in various forms including oils, edibles, and gummies. It has gained popularity as a treatment for various conditions, including those affecting children.

Does CBD Get You High?

CBD does not produce a “high.” While CBD can be purchased over the counter, Epidiolex, a CBD-based medication, requires a prescription and is used specifically to treat two rare and severe forms of epilepsy in children: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is a chemical found in both marijuana (Cannabis sativa) and hemp plants. The extracted CBD is chemically identical regardless of the plant source, but there are differences between the two. Hemp contains less resin compared to marijuana, and most CBD is found in this resin. Resin also includes THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, which is present in higher amounts in marijuana than in hemp.

CBD derived from either plant might contain THC, but hemp-derived CBD generally has lower THC levels. To avoid THC, opt for CBD isolate products rather than full-spectrum CBD. However, outside of Epidiolex, there’s no guaranteed way to ensure a CBD product is completely THC-free.

Forms of CBD

CBD is available in several forms, including:

  • CBD Oil: Often administered under the tongue or in capsule form, CBD oil can have an earthy taste, though flavored versions are available. It’s crucial to consult a pediatrician before using CBD oil.
  • Gummies: CBD-infused gummies can be a more palatable option, but keep them out of reach of children to avoid accidental consumption.
  • Transdermal Patches: These patches release CBD through the skin into the bloodstream, potentially providing a consistent dosage over time.

Uses of CBD Oil

CBD oil is used for several conditions, though its only FDA-approved use is for epilepsy.

  • Epilepsy: Epidiolex is approved for treating seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Clinical trials have shown it to be effective in reducing seizure frequency. However, store-bought CBD oil does not have the same scientific backing, and its safety and efficacy are less certain.
  • Autism: Some studies suggest CBD may improve symptoms in children with autism, such as seizures and agitation, though results should be interpreted with caution due to the lack of control groups in some studies. Ongoing research aims to determine safe and effective doses.
  • Anxiety: Preliminary studies suggest CBD may help reduce anxiety, but more research is needed, especially in children.
  • ADHD: Evidence on CBD’s effectiveness for ADHD is limited and inconclusive, with anecdotal reports from some parents.

Risks of CBD Oil for Children

CBD use in children is relatively new, and extensive safety studies are lacking. Potential side effects include restlessness, sleep disturbances, and interactions with other medications. CBD may interfere with drug metabolism similar to grapefruit.

Legal Status

CBD oil derived from hemp with less than 0.3% THC is legal in many areas, though some states have restrictions. Marijuana-derived CBD is federally illegal, and the legality of giving CBD oil to children can be unclear. Epidiolex is an exception and is legal with a prescription.

Choosing a CBD Product

When selecting a CBD product, consider:

  • Label Information: Check the CBD content per dose.
  • Source: Ensure the hemp is grown organically and free from pesticides.
  • Third-Party Testing: Choose products with a certificate of analysis (COA) from certified labs like AOAC, AHP, or USP to verify purity and potency.

Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment, especially for children.
