5-year-old kid attacked by dingo while playing on beach in Queensland, Australia
A 5-year-old boy is hospitalized with multiple injuries. dingo at a remote campsite queensland.
The toddler was at the Ocean Lake campground on Kgalli Island (formerly known as Fraser Island) when the dog lunged and began attacking him. The boy was bitten on his arm, head and buttocks on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said the boy’s father quickly intervened and saved the boy.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched and the boy was flown to Hervey Bay Airport with his mother. He was then taken to Hervey Bay Hospital where his condition is stable.
In August, the Queensland Government issued a warning about increased dingo activity in December on beaches and unfenced camping areas. Last week, a 7km long dingo fence was installed around the town of Orchid Beach.
The Wildlife Service said rangers were working to help families and identify which dogs were animals, adding that it did not believe the animals were provoked.
Linda Behlendorf, the ranger in charge of natural resource management, said the attack took place in an unfenced area of the island.
“Unfortunately these kids were playing in the sand and one of them got up and walked away,” she told News.com.au.
The children were near their parents, but one of them was ambushed by a dingo.
“These parents were keeping an eye on these kids. But if you’re camping in an unfenced area, make sure it’s secluded and there are wild dingoes around.” Please be careful.
“In this case, it was an unfortunate chain of events.”
But officials said they would not euthanize or move the dingoes. Behrendorff added: “At this stage, we are deploying additional rangers in the area and further ‘keeping dingoes safe’ education.”
Mayor George Seymour said it was a “terrifying ordeal” for the boy and his family. or a child under the age of seven.”
“This could easily have been fatal. This is a 5-year-old boy. It’s really important that visitors keep an eye on their children,” the mayor added.
Conflicts between humans and dingoes date back decades and are the island’s endemic predators, with such poignant incidents reported every year.
The island had its final fatality in April 2001 in a dingo attack in which nine-year-old Clinton Gage died after being attacked by two animals. The attack killed nearly 31 of his dingoes on Kgari Island.
